Without sound we are given no sense of the aesthetic quality of this piece. We see Acconci masturbate – but this ‘watching’ moves away from the intensity of what it would be to listen to this work. The listeners walk on top of Acconci, unaware of exactly where he is located. Acconci cannot ‘see’ his listeners, but responds to the sounds of their footsteps. We cannot hear his voice – its volume, quality, intensity.
