Vito Acconci, ‘Theme Song’, 1973

As mentioned in the excerpt under the video, Acconci figures a relation between ‘I’ and ‘you’. This relation is illusory. Acconci is singing and talking to himself. He is uncomfortably close to the video in a way that effects an unsolicited intimacy with his audience. He whispers, hums, sings, speaks in a low, seductive voice – there is a slippage between interiority and exteriority – a confusion between illusion and reality.
